Colour vs Black and White Printing
Choosing between colour and black-and-white printing depends on the purpose of the document. Colour can improve presentation and make charts or images easier to understand, while black-and-white is often the practical choice for text-heavy paperwork.
Both options can be selected through our Document Printing page.
When to choose black-and-white printing
Black-and-white printing works well when colour is not essential to understanding the content.
- Contracts and forms
- Letters and invoices
- Scripts and notes
- Internal reports
- Text-heavy manuals
- Draft documents
It is important to check how coloured elements convert to greyscale. Two different colours may appear as very similar shades of grey, making charts or highlighted text difficult to distinguish.
When to choose colour printing
Colour is useful when visual information, branding or photographs matter.
- Presentations and proposals
- Charts and diagrams
- Certificates
- Photographs and portfolios
- Training materials
- Branded business documents
Will screen colours look identical in print?
Not always. Screens create colour with light, while printers reproduce colour with ink or toner on paper. Very bright, dark or saturated colours may print differently from how they appear on a monitor. Thin coloured lines and pale text can also lose contrast.
Check documents before ordering
For black-and-white printing, preview the file in greyscale and ensure charts remain readable. For colour printing, check that important text has enough contrast against the background and that images are not too dark.
Can one document contain both colour and black-and-white pages?
A document may contain a mixture of page types, but the available pricing and order configuration depend on the options shown on the product page. Review the selected settings carefully before checkout.
Single- or double-sided?
The colour choice is separate from whether the document is printed on one or both sides. Double-sided printing can make longer documents more compact, while single-sided printing is useful for pages that will be displayed, annotated or inserted into folders.

Frequently asked questions
Is black-and-white suitable for coloured charts?
Only if the information remains clear after conversion to greyscale. Check the file before ordering.
Should certificates be printed in colour?
Colour is normally the better choice when logos, borders or branding form part of the design.
Why do dark colours look almost black?
Dark colours can lose separation in print, especially when the original design has low contrast.
