How to Choose the Best Photo for a Custom Mug

A photograph can look sharp on a small phone screen and still print poorly on a mug. The quality of the finished result depends mainly on the original file, lighting, focus and the way the image is cropped.

Use the original photo file

Whenever possible, upload the image directly from the phone or camera that took it. Messaging apps and social media often reduce image quality. Screenshots are usually smaller again and may include interface elements or an unsuitable crop.

How much resolution is enough?

There is no single perfect pixel size because the design can cover different areas of the mug. As a practical rule, use the largest version available. A file several thousand pixels wide gives much more flexibility than a small image copied from a website.

Do not enlarge a tiny file artificially. Increasing its dimensions does not restore missing detail and can make the result look softer.

Check focus and motion blur

Zoom into the eyes and face of the main subject. If they already look soft or smeared, printing cannot recreate the missing detail. Choose another frame from the same set if one is sharper.

Good lighting matters

Bright, even light generally prints better than a dark indoor image. Very deep shadows can lose detail, while heavily overexposed areas may print as plain white. A moderate brightness adjustment can help, but strong filters often create unnatural skin tones or noise.

Leave room for cropping

The printable area is wide and curved, so the photograph may need to be cropped. Leave space around faces, pets, logos and text. Avoid images where the important subject already touches the edge.

Portrait, landscape or square?

• Portrait: useful for one person or pet.
• Landscape: suitable for groups and wraparound scenes.
• Square: works well beside a name or short message.

Recommended file formats

High-quality JPG and PNG files are suitable for most photo mugs. PNG is especially useful for a logo or graphic with a transparent background. For business logos, vector artwork can provide the cleanest edges.

• Is the subject sharp?
• Is the image bright enough?
• Is this the original rather than a screenshot?
• Is there room around important details?
